The future of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) Scheme
This article appeared on the Farm Energy Centre on the 30th November 2015. You can view the full article on the Farm Energy Centre Website.
DECC has today announced degressions for the Non-Domestic RHI scheme that will be effective from January 2016. Small biomass under 200kW will see another 10% drop as well as biomethane injection.
This is good news for other technologies, particularly the medium sized biomass (200kW – 1MW), where there are no changes to the tariffs for the forthcoming quarter, however despite REA’s meeting with DECC last week, the future is still a little uncertain for the RHI scheme.
Here is REA’s summary of what they learned from DECC, further to the Chancellor’s autumn statement:
- For the forthcoming financial year the RHI scheme will remain open to new applicants.
- Other than some minor amendments, it will be in its current form.
- DECC will manage costs over the year by introducing an interim cap with new degression triggers to be taken to Parliament in the early part of 2016, meaning that the trigger levels from April 2016 are unknown.
The overall aim of the RHI reform is to improve value for money, reduce costs and improve budget management. Exactly how this will be done remains to be seen, but there are plans for DECC to consult with the industry over the coming weeks.
We’ll keep listening and watching out for more details as they happen.

Latest RHI Guidance – January 2015
The UK government (latest RHI guidance) has introduced the RHI scheme to encourage the switch to heat generated by renewable sources. This subsidy applies to qualifying biomass installations:
- Up to 6.8p paid per kWh of useful heat for small biomass.
- Up to 5.1p paid per kwh of useful heat for medium biomass.
- Large biomass receiving 2p paid per kwh of useful heat.
- Heat output to be metered and the support calculated from the amount of eligible heat, multiplied by the tariff level
Graso boilers added to RHI ECLIST, up to 1,000Kw.
We are pleased to confirm that the straw boilers we supply have been added to the RHI ECLIST, including all boilers up to 1,000Kw.
You can see our boilers directly displayed on this list on the RHI ECLIST web pages.
The RHI ECLIST will help locate RHI Emissions Certificates for biomass appliances, for support in the application process of the Non-Domestic RHI and the Domestic RHI. The list provides details of manufacturers’ products, associated fuel types and links to the relevant Emissions Certificate for download.
ARG Biomass Boilers pass latest RHI emissions tests
With effect from October 2014, ARG Biomass is proud to announce that the boilers we supply to our customers have an RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) emission certificate. ARG Biomass has an exclusive contract to supply European manufactured boilers within the UK. These boilers have been tested* in a laboratory and now come with full certification (BN EN ISO/IEC 1705:2005 accredited) for our customers to apply for the RHI scheme.
